I’m posting a link to this USGA rule which our league follows because it’s come to my attention on a few occasions, that some members aren’t aware of it or don’t understand the rule.

RULE – E-5
Don’t forget, you need to make your decision from where you hit your last shot that ended up out of bounds, or lost. If you call provisional, that’s your official play and you can’t change it once you proceed to where your ball came to rest out of bounds or was lost. So keep in mind if your provisional shot ends up worse you can’t change your mind.
